Customize Your Bedroom Furniture With Wood Moulding

by Michelle West

If you feel that your bedroom set is not as ornate as you would like it to be, you can customize it to have the decorative look that you want. Customizing bedroom furniture is not overly difficult to do and can typically be done over the course of a weekend. The guide below walks you through the quick and easy process for updating the look of your bedroom furniture on your own.

Measure the Furniture

The first thing you need to do is to measure the furniture that you plan to customize. The sides of dressers, nightstands, and trunks are often easy to customize, as well as the front of your headboard. Measure each area carefully to know how wide each piece is, as well as the length of each piece.

Choose Your Decorative Moulding

Next, you need to head to a home improvement store and go to the moulding department. The department will have many different types of moulding from which you can choose. You could choose to add strips around the edges of each piece of furniture to create some depth or large wooden cutouts that have intricate designs created in them. Measure the moulding you are considering to ensure that each piece will fit on your furniture nicely. You can always use a table saw to trim down the moulding as needed, as well.

Stain or Paint the Moulding

Next, you need to stain or paint the moulding so that it matches the finish of the bedroom set. Be sure to get as close to the finish as you can and allow each coat of stain or paint to dry thoroughly before applying another coat. Once the stain or paint is dry, add a coat of polyurethane gel to protect the wood from being damaged.

Attach the Moulding

Next, you need to lightly sand down the furniture in the areas where you plan to attach the moulding. Apply wood glue to the back of the moulding and press it firmly against the piece of furniture you are attaching it to. If you are attaching it to the headboard, it may be helpful to take the headboard off of the bed and lie it flat on the ground so that it is easier to attach the moulding without it sliding down the board.

Once the moulding is dry, you should have the customized bedroom set you want. If the finishes are as similar as they can possibly be, you should have a seamless look that seems as though the furniture was originally created that way.
